Welcome

We look forward to welcoming everyone to the Nordic U20 Match in Athletics in July 2026 between Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Norway, and Sweden at Carl´s Stadium in Vaasa.   

The local organizer in charge is Vasa Idrottssällskap. The short form is VIS. We bring together nearly 150 children and young people aged 7-13 in our track & field school. We have between 50 and 100 active youths and older age classes in athletics. In the national classification of track and field clubs, we are among the top ten.

We are collaborating with the Finnish Athlete Association and local athlete clubs. Together, we have hosted several national and international championships in Vaasa, such as the Finnish National Championships (Kalevan kisat) in 2024 and 2004, the Team Championships 1st League in 2017, and the European Cup 1. League in 2007 and 2001. 

The formal invitation with information and links on the city of Vaasa, accommodation, transportation, team costs, the arena, and deadlines will be sent out to the teams in mid-February 2026.

Travelling to Vaasa 

The city of Vaasa is located on the west coast of Finland. You can travel to Vaasa by plane, by boat, or by train, and of course by bus as well. The airport is approximately 30 minutes from the hotel, and the harbour is about 20 minutes away from the hotel. The train station is within a 200 m walking distance.  As soon as we have the time schedules for next Summer, we will share them with you.    

The competition arena is located at the address Ruutikellarintie 1 (på svenska: Krutkällarvägen 1), Vaasa. More information later.

Accommodation and meals 

All teams will be accommodated in the same hotel situated in the very centre of Vaasa. Breakfast and a well-sorted buffet dinner will be served at the hotel. Lunch, as salad, soup, or fast food, will be available at the arena. More information will be available in the invitation.

Transportation 

We would appreciate getting information about your travel plans in advance. We will need the exact information as soon as you have made the bookings.

There are direct flights from Helsinki-Vantaa to Vaasa, but the timetables are not yet available. The distance from Vaasa airport to the hotel is half an hour. We have an excellent ferry service, Wasaline, between Umeå in Sweden and Vaasa, which we can recommend. The distance from Vaasa harbour to the hotel is 15 minutes. By bus the distance from Helsinki-Vantaa airport to Vaasa is about 5-6 hours. Train is a possibility, but no timetables are available yet for next Summer, and prepare for 1-2 train changes. (Vantaa - Tikkurila - Seinäjoki - Vaasa or Vantaa- Helsinki-Seinäjoki - Vaasa). The train station in Vaasa is within a 200 m walking distance from the hotel.

We will monitor the publication of timetables and let you know. If you need assistance with the transportation to the hotel from other destinations than Vaasa, we are happy to help, but the cost is on you and will not be included in the price.

However if you arrive to Vaasa Airport or Vaasa Harbor, the transportation to the hotel is included. We will also have a shuttle bus between the hotel and the venue, which can be used by all teams on Friday evening, and on Saturday and Sunday. This service will be included in the price.
